I've decided to write better sound engine for my mod I was working on, called Amnesia back then. My idea about it was simple, bugless sound playback and wider range of sound formats supported. Half-Life's sound engine based on Miles library is limited in format support for some reason in default setting, so too it has it's issues (for me it were, sentences never finished the sentence in some cases, and I could still hear the position of sound, even if I've flagged the sound with "Play everywhere" flag).

Anyway, the thing is done today and I've decided to open source it, so others might find good use from it, or it might be good example how to handle sounds in FPS game using FMOD Ex library, which is the main core of the thing, as I've found it best compatible with audio devices, so too fastest. Latest versions (as I plan to update this topic if it will get to bug fix) will be always released under LGPL license, which means, you can freely use the sound engine in your modification even with keeping source code of the mod to yourself.


  • wider audio format support, from all common types of WAVE, to compressed formats as OGG or MP3
  • bugless playback, comparing to Half-Life implementation
  • surround sound
  • better, more natural reverbation (room effects)
  • perfect compatibility with Half-Life implementation, though, multiplayer is not supported in current version
  • no more issues of forced 2D sound when using Windows Vista or Windows 7
  • support from my side when it'll get to some problem (bug) - just leave me PM here
