Files and folders required to make a Mod

This setup is based on the basis of a simple working mod, like just an extension to Half-Life, where there are no new weapons, enemy, or entities (i.e. NOT a Total Conversion).

Single Player:

modfolder
¦
+-gfx
¦ ¦
¦ +-shell
¦ ¦
¦ +-splash.bmp
¦
+-maps
¦ ¦
¦ +-graphs
¦ ¦ ¦
¦ ¦ +-mapname.nod
¦ ¦ mapname.nrp
¦ ¦
¦ +-mapname.bsp
¦
+-media
¦ ¦
¦ +-logo.avi
¦
+-Save
¦
+-buffer.dat (gets created in HL if there are invalid file paths)
+-config.cfg (copy HL's)
+-custom.hpk (gets created at the same time as buffer.dat)
+-liblist.gam
+-skill.cfg (copy HL's)

Note:
The 'buffer.dat' is only created if you have given HL invalid file paths/names of some sort. If you do not get this file, don't worry, you have done fine. This file can also be safely deleted, as when you fix the problem it won't appear anymore.

Multiplayer:

For a multiplayer mod, you need all the above folders, plus these in the root of your mod folder files:

cached.wad (all other mods have it, you don't need it though)
config.cfg (you can copy valve's)
custom.hpk (this gets created by HL)
game.cfg (this gets created by HL)
liblist.gam (copy valves, then edit to your specs.)
listenserver.cfg (copy valve's)
mapcycle.txt (for cycling maps)
motd.txt (for intro message)
pldecal.wad (for custom logos)
readme.txt (optional)
server.cfg (copy valve's)
settings.scr (this gets created by HL)
skill.cfg (copy valve's)
user.scr (this gets created by HL)
valve.rc (I don't think you need it, but include anyway)

If none of the files that get created by HL are created, don't worry, you obviously don't need them.

Useful tutorials, I'll get some screens to make it a bit easier to follow and put it up on the website soon.

Yeah no problem, the file structure is actually easier to understand as I have it, when I put it on here all the paths sort of collapsed as the forum doesn't accept Tab spacing.

I have a whole bunch of notes and tutorials that I did kind of just for personal reference when I was big into HL mapping and editing. I'd like to be able to release a lot more, but most of my stuff would have to be totally re-worked if it is to be understood from a beginner's perspective. And of course screenshots are always a bonus, but I'd literally have to re-install all my HL editing stuff in order to re-create certain 'scenes' - and as I'm no longer actively doing HL modding, that would just be too much to handle! But if you're happy to add screenshots, then by all means feel free to do so.

I've made a "template" of sorts with all the required folders and a liblist.gam file with helpful comments.

If you have any suggestions for improvements or if I've made any stupid errors (yes) then please do say :P.

Yeah that template zip file looks OK. I don't recall seeing a 'gfx/detail' folder in any of the mods I've played though. What goes in there? Also, I believe that 'resource' folder is optional, right?

The detail folder contains TGAs to be used for detail textures. If you have CS Condition Zero, take a look in there. I'll add to the readme saying what folders are and aren't necessary for a bare-essentials mod.

Updated the .zip file. I replaced the text readme with a sexy html file that's much easier to read.

What sort of screenshots do you mean? Not sure how they would help :?.

A visual aid of the dictionaries as windows.

Like

C:\Users\Dylan\Desktop\Personal Would be

Image

Imo, would give the viewer a visual aid like "Okay, so that's what he meant by C:\lol\rofl\lmao\mod\source"

Captain B.O, I want to request that template .zip file again, so I can include this tutorial in the main site, since I never actually noticed this tutorial existed, do you still have it available?

Found it in an old backup of my web server :kklien:

Hopefully this one will stick around for longer:

This tutorial is now added on main site, and also, thanks for the fancy template you provided Captain B.O.
